The sun is out more than once a week, which in the Pacific Northwest means that Spring is on the horizon! We've still got a month to go, but it's never too soon to start your spring cleaning inside and out!
We're going to refer to one of our favorite housekeeping experts Martha Stewart; she writes:
"There are few rites of spring more satisfying than the annual clean. For many people, however, the pleasure comes only after the work is finished. Your spring cleaning may never become effortless, but you can make the project more manageable -- and even enjoyable."
One thing that makes cleaning more manageable is a list, and then planning to check things off on the list over several weekends, so you aren't overwhelming yourself.
"Create a realistic schedule, keeping in mind that a single weekend won't suffice, as you'll need several days for more involved projects, such as shampooing carpets and organizing closets. Whether you prefer to proceed from the attic to the basement or start outdoors and wind your way inside, focus on one task at a time. And be sure to enlist the help of family members."
Check out Martha's list, which we'll summarize a bit of below:
- Wipe walls and ceilings
- Reseal grout lines
- Vacuum and shampoo rugs
- Dust books and shelves
- Clean upholstered furnishings
- Polish metal door and window hardware
- Dust your home thoroughly
- Wax wooden furniture
- Ensure fire safety (change batteries in smoke detectors etc.)
- Wash window screens
- Clean window treatments
- Rotate bed and clean linens
- Discard expired cosmetics and beauty products
- Update first-aid kit
- Clean attic and basement, giving away or discarding unwanted items
Additionally, one of the most important cleaning tasks in the early Spring is to thoroughly wash the windows in your home to ensure that the most amount of sunlight can come in as possible. This will brighten your space and make you feel more cheerful as the season changes into warmer weather. Here's an excerpt from Martha's list on cleaning windows:
